Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Marty Schultz is only three weeks away from an epic journey, as the 70-year-old Pinconning resident plans to hike the infamous Appalachian Trail beginning next month. His journey will begin April 15, a nod to his late mother’s birthdate, in Georgia.

My mother’s grandmother, my great-grandmother, emigrated from Ireland. My mother inherited her red hair, freckles and light Irish skin. I didn’t get the red hair, but definitely inherited the freckles and fair, easily sunburned skin.

SSC wrestler places third in state competition

Four Standish-Sterling wrestlers traveled to Ford Field for the 2023 MHSAA State Championship March 3 and 4, with one student taking third in the state in her division. Dannielle Christian won her first two matches of the tournament, both by pin to advance to the semifinals before losing to the eventual State runner-up by fall in the second period.

Thumbelina puppet show set in Standish

STANDISH — Thumbelina, a fully-staged puppet show, will grace the Standish Area Art Center, 3233 Grove Road, this Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. The Hans Christian Anderson-penned tale centers on Thumbelina, who unknowingly embarks on a fantastic journey after taking a stroll in the forest.

Local martial arts school Dragon Fire Taekwondo competed in the Michigan's Poomsae Cup Tournament in Midland Michigan that took place on Saturday, Feb. 25.
