In 2007 when I began writing for local newspapers, there was talk about local newspapers dying. That conversation still exists today, especially in an era dominated by digital media, social networking, and instant access to information.

Arenac County honors Memorial Day

The following Memorial Day activities are set this Sunday, May 28: Au Gres Annual Memorial Day Parade, Downtown Au Gres, 1 p.m. The procession will begin at US-23 and Water Street in Au Gres and end at the Au Gres-Sims School. Those interested in participating in the line-up can get more information or enter by calling 989-329-7444. The top three floats will receive cash prizes: first place, $50; second place, $25; and third place, $15.

Cause for celebration

Arenac Community Funds held its annual golf outing at Huron Breeze Golf Course in Au Gres, May 19. Proceeds from the event go to Arenac Community Funds, an affiliate fund of the Bay Area Community Foundation.

ACF invests in the future of Arena County The Arenac Community Fund held a reception May 17 to celebrate scholarship and grant recipients from the last year. The ACF Committee has three major fundraisers each year.

Commissioners discuss library successes, solar farms

989-387-9295 ARENAC COUNTY — Arenac County Commissioners held their regular meeting on May 9, addressing various matters including the district library, Arenac Community Center, and solar farm concerns. Jenn Donner, director of the Iosco-Arenac District Library, presented the library's 2022 Annual Report.

Nature walk

The annual Saginaw Bay Nature Festival, hosted by the Rotary Club of Pinconning and Standish, will host its third nature walk Wednesday, May 24. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are invited to the McLean Nature Preserve, located at 2199 N. Flajole Road in Rhodes. The free tour begins at 4 p.m. and will have attendees exploring the preserve's picturesque trails and the region's vibrant flora and fauna. The preserve is north of Erickson Road in Garfield Township. The 'Wildflower Walk' will be led by Jim McLean and will offer an opportunity to witness the beauty of wildflowers in full bloom, observe a variety of bird species, spot turtles, and savor the views of the north branch of the Kawkawlin River.

Summers in Standish

Events slated at Depot and Welcome Center 989-387-9295 STANDISH — The Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center in Standish is set to host a multitude of events this summer, from community garage sales and farmers markets to summer concerts and a vintage car show. The 6th Annual Arenac County Community Garage Sale will take place June 2 - 3 from 9 a.m.
