Library events

The Mary Johnston Memorial Library, 114 N. Street in Standish, has updated hours for the summer. The library is open from 12 – 7.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

On Saturday, April 19, the library will show a family fun movie at 11:30 a.m. Visitors are allowed to bring a covered drink and free popcorn will be served.

Kids fishing contest

The Sterling Sportsmen’s Association will host its Kids Sucker Fishing Contest this Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the banks of the Rifle River.

The contest will be broken up into age groups and all fish must be weighed at the club by 3 p.m. All children will receive a free ticket for lunch. Prizes for all age groups and participation prizes will be awarded. This is a free event for children up to 17 years old.

Registration must be done at the Sterling Sportsmen’s Association Club before fishing. The club is located at 339 S. Melita Road in Sterling.

Preparing for spring

A spring cleanup at the Depot will be held Saturday, April 19, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Standish Historical Depot Welcome Center, 107 N. Main St. in Standish. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help. Participants are asked to bring rakes, gloves and any pruning equipment.

Don’t miss the fish

The VFW Post #3724 is nearing the end of this year’s weekly Lent Fish Fries, held every Friday from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Arenac County Veterans Club, M-76 in Standish. The last dinner for this year will be held April 18.

The fry includes fish, shrimp or chicken tenders, baked potato, coleslaw and bread. Dine in and take outs are available. Call 989-846-4091.

Standish parade April 26

The 52nd Loyalty Day Parade in Standish, hosted by the VFW and Post #3724, will take place Saturday, April 26, with the theme “Liberty Sweet Liberty.”

Community members, clubs, organizations, churches, and businesses are invited to participate in the procession. Cash prizes will be awarded for commercial and non-commercial floats.

Parade lineup will be at 11 a.m. along Industrial Park Drive next to MyMichigan Health Standish, and proceed at noon along Cedar Street east to the Arenac Community Center.

The VFW Post will hold a spaghetti lunch at the Arenac County Veterans Club following the parade.
