Kids Sucker Fishing Contest

The Sterling Sportsmen’s Association will host its Kids Sucker Fishing Contest on Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the banks of the Rifle River.

The contest will be broken up into age groups and all fish must be weighed at the club by 3 p.m. All children will receive a free ticket for lunch. Prizes for all age groups and participation prizes will be awarded. This is a free event for children up to 17 years old.

Registration must be done at the Sterling Sportsmen’s Association Club before fishing. The club is located at 339 S. Melita Road in Sterling.

Spring cleanup

The Standish Historical Depot Welcome Center, 107 N. Main St. in Standish, will host its annual Standish Depot Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 19, beginning at 10 a.m.

Organizers are seeking volunteers to do spring cleanup tasks around the Depot, including trimming dead plants, and freshening up green spaces with new mulch. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes, gloves and any pruning equipment.

Lent Fish Fries

The VFW Post #3724 is hosting its weekly Lent Fish Fries, held every Friday until April 18, from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Arenac County Veterans Club, M-76 in Standish. Phone number: 989-846-4091.

The dinners include fish, shrimp or chicken tenders, baked potato, coleslaw and bread. Cost is $13. A fish/shrimp combo is $16. Dine in and take outs are available.
