Americana, folk and bluegrass music featured at Standish Art Center

Mary Sue Wilkinson and Mark Schrock is the featured duo at Northeast Art Center in Standish for the Second Sunday Concert series season opener Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. The art center is located at the corner of Grove Street Road and US-23, a half mile north of the Standish traffic light.

Community gathers for Depot Days

Community members gathered to celebrate Depot Days at the Standish Historical Depot Oct. 3-4. The event, started in 2005, commemorates the original founding and opening of the depot in October of 1889, said Curt Hillman, chair of the depot’s board of trustees.

Eagle Festival, a fundraiser for Fairview Area Schools athletic program, begins at 2:30 p.m. with a parade from Boney Park to the school. Soccer and volleyball games afterwards.

Thunderbolts defeat Cardinals

The Whittemore-Prescott Cardinals varsity football team lost a home game last Friday against the Mio-AuSable Thunderbolts by a final score of 44-0.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reported just after noon on Wednesday, Oct. 8, that a wildfire in Roscommon County that burned between 80-100 acres was 100% contained.

Federal government shuts down

The United States Federal Government shut down last week on Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. after failing to pass a spending bill or continuing resolution. Then on Thursday night, the State of Michigan Legislature, which had passed its own temporary plan Oct. 1 in order to avoid shutting down, passed a budget through the House shortly before midnight, and through the Senate after midnight.
