Au Gres strives to put project ‘on the map’

A project in the city of Au Gres has been named one of the top 10 finalists in a $50,000 competition.The Consumers Energy Foundation has announced 10 finalists for its statewide Put Your Town on the Map Competition, that will award $50,000 in grant funding to three projects throughout the state.Communities with fewer than 10,000 residents and projects designed to help them grow and thrive had until February 15 to apply.

Reimagined facility will offer enhanced programming, services to Arenac County

The former elementary school building in Standish received a boost in its journey to be reimagined as a comprehensive community center thanks to a $1.1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.The Sunrise Community Resource Center will support residents of Arenac and surrounding counties with services that include:• Before- or after-school educational activities.• Licensed full-time childcare.• Access to career and workforce training.• Indoor and outdoor spaces accessible to the public for recreational and athletic activities.• Programming for seniors.• Meeting spaces for neighborhood and community organizations.• Space for social and health services.The state awarded $64 million in community center grant funds for 100 Michigan municipalities and organizations to expand programming or work on capital projects.

Puppet Theatre staged at Standish Art Center

On Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m., a fully staged puppet show titled King Arthur: A Sword and the Stone will be performed at the Northeast Art Center, located at the corner of Grove Street Road and US-23 in Standish (½-mile north of the Standish traffic light).Join King Arthur on a fabulous journey from his home to Merlin’s mystical mountain cave where voices are heard from the trees and the water comes to life.
