August sped by in a blur, due to my full calendar, so I have been really looking forward September. Since early September is not technically autumn, I was expecting late summer weather this past week.

Make our roads safer

In response to several serious traffic crashes on M-33 north of Rose City, an increase in reports of reckless driving incidents on M-33 and an increase in general complaints from the public concerning speeding on M-33, law enforcement officials are taking action to encourage better driving behavior on the local stretch of this state highway.

Season opens for Panthers swim & dive

The Standish-Sterling Central swimming and diving team opened the season with a pentathlon Aug. 21 at John Glenn High School in Bay City. Swimmers participated in five events to earn a combined total score.

It was hot the day I visited the Ogemaw County Fair last week and I ducked inside an exhibit building to get out of the sun. The best of show display for antiques caught my eye and reminded me of a miniature antique dresser I entered in the Saginaw County Fair back in the 70s. My grandfather helped me restore the dresser, a salesman’s sample, and it won a blue ribbon.

What’s in a name?

Jean and Richard Nixon hosted a book signing Aug. 16 at Modern Craft Winery in downtown Au Gres to promote “The Legend of Fingerless Will Nixon: The Scottish Borderlands 1508-1509.” The couple collaborated on the project, which Richard started when he was recuperating from ankle surgery.

Caregiver Corner

The Oscoda County District Library received resources, tools and information for family caregivers from the Region 9 Area Agency on Aging, as did libraries in Arenac, Ogemaw, Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Crawford, Iosco, Montmorency, Otsego, Presque Isle and Roscommon counties.
