Standish-Sterling student signs to play softball and golf at Alma College

STANDISH— Standish-Sterling Central student, Laiken Ex signed Feb. 20 to play softball and golf at Alma College.

Ex said she knew softball was her sport when she started on varsity as a freshman. Her proudest softball moment was when she got all-state honorable mention her sophomore year and her proudest golf moment was getting second team all-conference her senior year after playing golf for only two years.

Softball coach Rich Sullivan said Ex, who has been a starter in the outfield since her freshman year, achieved the Tri-Valley all-conference as a sophomore and junior, won all-district, all- regional, and all-state, her sophomore and junior seasons, and was on the MLive Dream Team her sophomore and junior seasons.

Through softball and golf, Ex has gained friendships, memories, patience and the ability to make friends during matches. She enjoys how she can be herself when playing softball and how easily it comes to her. Her favorite part of golf is how laid back it is.

Ex said the deciding factor for her decision to play for Alma was seeing how tight-knit the small community is and how they felt like a family. She said her strength as an athlete and a person is her ability to lift people up when they are down. Ex plans on giving her all at Alma and showing that she deserves to be there.

As well as playing softball and golf, Ex plans on studying neuroscience at Alma because of her interest in the brain.

Coach Sullivan said he coached both Laiken Ex and her current and future Alma teammate, Lakin Fryzel, since they were nine and they both are a true backbone to this program.
