Mary J. Freehling-Jordan

Died April 21, 2018

Mary Joan Freehling-Jordan, 84, a lifelong resident of Au Gres, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City.

Mary was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Au Gres to the late William F. and Helen K. (Maser) Eichstaedt. She married Bernard Freehling and together they raised three children, Vicki, Janet and Scott. Many years after Bernard’s death, Mary married Ernest Jordan Jr.

Mary was a charter member of Standish Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Au Gres Lioness Club and Christ United Methodist Church, where she held many positions. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women and Emmaus Community. Mary served as the Au Gres Township supervisor, deputy treasurer and register of deeds in Arenac County for many years, retiring May 1, 1996. She was also a paraprofessional at Au Gres-Sims Schools. Mary held the title of Arenac County Onion Queen in 1950. She loved to garden, crochet, knit, golf, travel, bowl and most especially, travel to the casino. Mary was always cooking or baking, especially for her granddaughters; they never went home empty-handed! Her two house cats, Puss and Boots, were a big part of her life, even if she often complained about them.

Mary is survived by her children, Vickie Sheeder of Au Gres, Janet Freehling of Au Gres and Scott (Dawn) Freehling of Sterling; stepchildren, Pam (Dan) Roiter, Wendell (Terri) Jordan and Kim (Tom) Pieske; sister-in-law, Helen Eichstaedt, Margaret Bilacic, Alice Freehling and Zella Jean Freehling; grandchildren, Kendra, Marci (Chris), Brooke (Ashley), Brittany (Richie) and Branda; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Gavin and Connor; seven step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; special niece, Kathy Thompson; and many other nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, and husbands, Bernard in 1978 and Ernest in 2017, Mary was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law in 2004, Bernard (Kathy) Freehling; son-in-law, David Sheeder, in 2012; brothers, William, John and Rudy; and sisters, Irene and Betty Lou.

Our hearts are broken and she will be missed very much, but we know she is with the Lord and those who went before her. Her faith was strong and we knew she was tired; this was God’s time.

Visitation for Mary will take place from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Buresh Funeral Home, 101 E. Michigan Ave., Au Gres, MI 48703. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at Christ United Methodist Church, 3322 E. Huron Rd., Au Gres. Pastor David Wichert will officiate. Her family will welcome friends at church Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Cremation will follow the funeral service and she will be laid to rest in the Sims-Whitney Cemetery at a later date.
