Kids Day is coming to Standish

STANDISH — Santa will be joining local children for breakfast at Ascension Standish Hospital Dec. 8 and then children will be able to visit participating businesses, where several activities will await them during Kids Day.

Hosted by the Standish Area Chamber of Commerce, Kids Day includes six local businesses, along with the hospital. Eden Fields Assisted Living, Sunrise Family Credit Union, McDonald’s, Rite Aid, the Standish Historical Depot and Shopko are participating and will provide a craft or activity.

Breakfast at Ascension Standish Hospital will go from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and Kids Day participants hosting a craft or activity go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The craft provided is entirely up to the business, chamber President Tara Binder said, but typically it is a holiday-oriented project such as a Christmas ornament.

Kids Day has been held in Standish for a number of years now, Binder said, adding that the purpose of the event is not only to shine a light on some of the area’s businesses but also to provide a day of fun for families.

“It’s very important that families have something local to be able to take their kids out to and that doesn't cost them anything,” she said. “We know that holiday times can be costly for families and so it’s nice to be able to offer, in partnership with some area businesses, something that is completely free for them.”

Binder said past participating businesses have reported that several children showed up and seemed to enjoy participating in their activity or craft.

Kids Day is enjoyed by not only the kids but the businesses themselves, she said, explaining that leading up to the event, the chamber receives many calls regarding Kids Day.

“People definitely do look forward to it, which is why we are going to continue to offer it,” Binder said.
