Home improvement program receives grant funds

STANDISH — The Arenac County Home Improvement Program had good news when it recently received a grant of more than double what it requested.

Program Manager LeeAnn Fischer said she applied for a $25,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grant, and instead received $60,000.

“Not many were applying so they gave me the bulk of it, which is wonderful because I can help more people if they apply,” she said.

Local homeowners can apply for funds to use for emergency home repair, or improvements such as windows, doors, siding, well, septic or roof. The funds are given in the form of a deferred loan, or a regular loan with an interest rate of 0-3 percent, based on income.

Fischer said the average loan for home improvement is $15,000-$18,000, and loans for emergency repairs tend to be about $5,000.

The home improvement program still has close to half the funds left over from the last grant.

“I’ve had quite a few people apply for it; I just need more,” Fischer said.
