Free fishing day for kids to return to Troy's Pond

Posted

Au GRES — Ducks Unlimited, the Arenac County Walleye Club and the Sterling Sportsmen’s Association will be hosting their sixth Kids Fishing Day, Saturday, May 4.

Switala said the event is meant for kids and their families to come out, enjoy the day and catch some fish while encouraging them to continue to utilize the outdoors.

“Back when I was growing up, the trout opener was as big as the Rifle opener,” Switala said. “You don’t hear that anymore but some people still think it’s a tradition. It gets kids out in the outdoors and I want more getting the youth in the outdoors.”

The event, to be held at Troy’s Pond in Au Gres, is free of charge and is intended for children up to the age of 14.

Young anglers must be accompanied by an adult and attendees should bring their own chairs and fishing poles.

Bait, snacks, refreshments and a light lunch will be provided by organizers while brook trout will be supplied by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Baby Brookie Program.

“They come in a big giant tanker” SSA president Todd Switala said. “There is water and fish in there and then they open up a back valve and we dump them into the big pond. (The program) tries to educate (the kids) and get them into fishing and hopefully they get hooked and get into fishing later in life.”

This year, there will be a fish-cleaning station on-site, Switala said, and currently he is trying to round up more volunteers to monitor the station and help guide kids in the process of preparing a fish to cook.

Attendees will then be able to take home their catch to eat at home.

The pond is located at 618 S. Santiago Rd and the event goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call Switala at 989-714-7447 or Walleye club member Jerry Ott at 989-876-8307.
