Au Gres school board elects 2020 officers

The Au Gres-Sims school board elected President Fred Robel, Vice President Erik Schwiderson, Secretary Nick Moore, Treasurer Heather Caulfield and Board Secretary/ Treasurer pro-tem Norma Schwiderson as its 2020 officers at the Jan 20 meeting. Superintendent Jeff Collier was elected the board spokesman.

Amy Wassman, school health coordinator of Saginaw ISD, gave the board and audience a presentation about HIV prevention training and sex ed curriculum options for the school district.

Wassman discussed the choices parents have regarding the different levels of education available for students and what is and is not mandated by the state.

She said HIV education is mandated at the elementary, middle and high school levels and the state’s position is to focus on teaching abstinence as the best way for prevention.

“I will say once you get to middle school and high school it’s really hard to talk about HIV prevention and not get into that sex ed conversation,” she said. “You’re missing a key piece of prevention there.”

Dan Lapan of RC Hendrick and Son Construction also presented the estimates for two potential construction projects that the school may undergo in the future including a secure entryway for the elementary school and an entrance to the entrance to the athletic facility.
