Alger Parks and Rec to host evening of fun July 27

ALGER — Moffatt Township Park is about to come alive once again for its fourth annual Music in the Park July 27.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Alger Parks and Rec Chairwoman Marion Chard said. “This fundraiser basically helps us to function through the year and put on all our events.”

Throughout the year parks and rec hosts a number of events including an Easter egg hunt, trunk or treat and a Christmas party, as well as T-ball and baseball programs in the summer. In November each year, it puts together about 25 food baskets with ingredients to make up a Thanksgiving meal — and plenty of leftovers — for those in need in Moffatt Township.

She said typically Music in the Park brings in between $2,500 and $4,000 for these programs and events.

Chard said the event is more successful each year and brings not only local people but visitors from surrounding communities.

“Every year we try to make it a little more attractive,” she said, noting that last year activities like a bounce house and fire department smokehouse were added. “We’re trying to have extracurricular activity besides music.”

As for the music, Chard said organizers try to change it up a little each year to attract a different crowd. In past years there has been a lot of rock and blues, so this year the focus is more on country and light rock. Groups include Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame members Lenny Hicks and Randy Leiter, “postmodern pop” group J.D. & the Salingers and country rock singers Todd Michael and Rob Dutcher of the Todd Michael Band Unplugged.

The event will also include food, raffles for items donated by individuals and businesses, 50-50s and kids activities. Chard said this year parks and rec has obtained a liquor license, so beer, wine and “adult slushies” will be served. Due to the conditions of the license, attendees cannot bring their own alcohol or coolers.

While the park’s improvement projects — including bathrooms, a septic and water to the concession stands — will not be done in time for this year’s event, kids will be able to enjoy the new playscape that was just installed.

Music in the Park will be held under the pavilion, rain or shine, from 5 p.m. to midnight. There is a $10 entry fee, and those 12 and younger are free.

“We have great entertainers this year and all are willing to put on a show for the community,” Chard said. “We have wonderful raffle items. (The event) gives the public a good idea of how our parks and rec program is going. It’s a great way to spend a summer evening — a cheap night of entertainment for the whole family.”

Moffatt Township Park is located at 1601 Henry St., Alger.
