4-H Clever Cloverbuds club returning in October

STANDISH — The Arenac County 4-H SPIN Club will be starting its fall Clever Cloverbuds program, an introductory club for kids ages five through seven to learn about what 4-H has to offer, on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The club will feature a variety of crafts, science experiments and other STEM-based activities. 4-H SPIN Club Coordinator Missy LeFever said that, in the past, kids have gotten to take part in activities ranging from constructing volcanoes to creating art projects for public display and even physical activities such as yoga offered in comprehensive lessons.

“We want them to be learning but having fun at the same time,” LeFever said. “I try to keep a theme for each session so throughout that day we’re focusing on the same thing.”

LeFever said that 4-H held a six-week Clever Cloverbuds session this past spring, as well as a day camp. While she said she expects a lot of return participants, she is always encouraging new members to enroll.

The club will meet for six Wednesday sessions in total, Oct. 16 and 30, Nov. 6 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 8 from 6 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. She said that the five- to seven-year-old age restriction includes any children who will turn five years old before Jan. 1, and while parents may enroll them after the start date, she said it is preferable that enrollment be done early so she can ensure enough resources will be available for each activity.

Enrollment is $10 for current 4-H members and $30 for new members, $20 of which goes toward a 4-H annual registration fee. However, LeFever said that the Arenac County 4-H offers scholarship funds to cover the cost of anyone for whom the price of membership would be prohibitive.

“I really encourage everyone to try it,” LeFever said. “It’s a good chance to learn about how 4-H works, make some new friends and try some activities they maybe haven’t tried before.”
