2020 Arenac County Fair canceled

ARENAC COUNTY— The Arenac County Fair Board announced the cancellation of the 2020 fair via Facebook due to unforeseen circumstances regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Whitmer announced the second extension of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” effective through May 15 and the extension of the State of Emergency until May 28. Though an end date is seemingly nearing, it is unclear when day-to-day life will completely return to what was once normal.

With that in mind, the fair board sent a notice saying, “After taking many factors into consideration, the health and safety of our fair community is our top priority. We cannot guarantee that it will be safe to have everyone together in large groups in the near future.”

According to Fair Manager Melanie Sobieray, the board determined waiting until the last minute to make a decision would make it hard to find volunteers and finding sponsorships would be difficult due to many businesses being closed.

With uncertainty of how long the pandemic will last and when social distancing will end, the board was unsure how many people would be in attendance.

The “Sew it, Grow it, Show it” themed fair was scheduled for July 21-25. According to the fair website, all main events are cancelled as well including the Queen pageant, senior citizen day, mud bog, the 4H and FFA Livestock Sale, tractor pulls, kid’s day and Bump n’ Run.

Arenac County 4-H posted on Facebook that youths with livestock projects should continue with them as club leaders “work with the 4-H/FFA Livestock Committee on the availability of virtual shows and ways to market your project.”

“We would like to thank all of our volunteers, participants, sponsors, and community for their patience and continued support throughout the years especially during this difficult time,” stated the fair board. “The tradition of family fun will be able to continue next year, July 20-24, as we look forward to making the 2021 Arenac County Fair the best one yet.”
