2016 lottery winners head to circuit court for stream of home invasions.

ARENAC COUNTY— Bay County couple Stephanie Harvell and Mitchell Arnswald hit the jackpot back in 2016 after winning $500,000 from a $5 Michigan Lottery Hot Jackpot instant game ticket. Fast forward three years and the couple are now facing charges for several home invasions linked to Arenac, Saginaw, Bay, Midland, and Gladwin counties.

In a Michigan Lottery press release at the time of Harvell receiving the $500,000, Harvell said her family was living paycheck to paycheck and had received an eviction notice the same day she scratched off the ticket.

Three years later, on Aug. 14, 2019, the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department responded to a total of four breaking and entering complaints in the area and worked together with the Bay County Sheriff’s Department to identify the suspects’ vehicle.

According to the statement in support of complaint for warrant, a list was put together of the multiple break-ins in the numerous counties and a search warrant for a GPS tracker on the suspected vehicle was obtained.

On Aug. 29, a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and the suspects were identified as Harvell and Arnswald. Multiple items allegedly taken from homes could be seen in the vehicle and they allegedly confessed to the breaking and enterings.

Harvell and Arnswald had hearings in 81st District Court in Arenac County Dec. 30 and both cases are now being bound over to circuit court. The next hearing for Arnswald is his circuit court pretrial on Jan. 15 and Harvell’s pretrial is on Jan. 27.
