Writers’ workshop returns

Save the date for Gateway to Writing

After a several-year hiatus, Mid-Michigan Writers’ annual one-day program “Gateway to Writing” is back for its 16th season. “Keep Your Readers Turning the Pages,” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Standish. The featured speakers are Michigan writers Dario Ciriello, author of memoir Aegean Dream, The Fiction Writing Handbook, two novels and a short story collection; and Diane Hammond, author of five novels, including Hannah’s Dream and Going to Bend.

“Keep Your Readers Turning the Pages” will feature a dynamic, in-depth discussion of the art, craft and magic of writing fiction, from the viewpoint of two successful and lifelong practitioners. Topics will include such wide-ranging subjects as identifying and developing a compelling story, plotting vs. seat-of-the-pantsing, creating complex characters, controlling viewpoint, and using dialogue effectively. The program is appropriate for writers at all levels and as well as avid readers.

The Gateway to Writing program will be held Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northeast Arts Center, 3233 Grove Street Road, Standish. Cost is $40 and includes lunch and materials. Preregistration is required. For more information, call 989-482-9005 or 989-846-6546. Send check or money order to Mid-Michigan Writers, PO Box 924, Standish, MI 4865.
