West Branch man drowns in Arenac County

Posted

ARENAC COUNTY — A 64-year-old West Branch man died in the Saginaw Bay early May 8, after he fell into the water.

According to Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre, Joseph Houf was boating with his wife when he leaned overboard to untangle some line and fell into the water. Houf was reportedly not wearing a life jacket.

McIntyre said the call came in at about 8:01 a.m., when his department was dispatched to Eagle Bay Marina in Standish for a possible drowning.

McIntyre said the sheriff’s department and the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police were able to locate the wife and the vessel approximately 2 1/2 miles offshore. Nearby fishermen located the body of Houf.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted the sheriff’s department in the recovery of Houf’s body.

It had been approximately two years since the sheriff’s department had responded to a drowning, according to McIntyre. Body recovery is one of the constitutional responsibilities of a county sheriff.
