Wertz Warriors to tee off Sept. 2

Au GRES — Knoll View Golf Course in Au Gres is once again hosting the Wertz Warriors golf outing to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan, with this year’s scramble scheduled for a shotgun start at noon Sept. 2.

This is the seventh year for the golf outing, said Knoll View owner and Wertz Warriors member Brian Knoll. He said the outing is $70 per person or $280 per team. If someone wants to golf, but can’t put together a foursome, Knoll said they should not hesitate to sign up.

“If they want to sign up individually we can get them on a team,” he said.

Registration covers the cost of golf and the steak dinner that follows. Participants will compete in different hole games, such as the longest putt, and there will also be skins and mulligans available. Knoll said tickets will be sold for the Wertz Warriors’ unique raffle.

“It’s a helicopter golf ball drop,” he said. “We put the raffle numbers on the balls and the closest one to the hole wins the prize.”

Raffle prizes include a gas grill donated by Northwoods Wholesale Outlet, an overnight stay at the Soaring Eagle Casino Resort, a gas card for Pier 23 and a gift card for Inland Marine.

“All of the prizes are donated,” Knoll said. “There is nothing bought as far as prizes.”

Terry Hodges of West Branch will do the helicopter ball drop and then land around 5:30 p.m., Knoll said.

Last year participation in the outing was down a little bit, but Knoll said there was still a large turnout.

“It’s gone over pretty well,” he said. “Last year we were down a little bit with 27 teams. The year before we had 34.”

The outing usually raises between $8,000 and $12,000 with all proceeds going to support Special Olympics Michigan, Knoll said.

Preregistration is preferred for the outing. To register or for more information, contact Knoll at 989-876-4653 or 989-903-5375.
