Tom Rosebrugh to be remembered during seventh annual memorial race

Posted

WHITTEMORE — Rubber will meet the road June 30 as more than 15 racers smoke tires and fuel in an attempt to bring home the trophy at Whittemore Speedway during the Growler 100.

The Growler, also known as the Tom Rosebrugh Memorial, is a tribute to local businessman and racer Tom Rosebrugh, who was killed in a logging accident in 2011.

The event features 100 competitive laps as drivers in super late model cars try to earn the trophy and bragging rights.

Tony Rosebrugh, son of Tom Rosebrugh, said this year’s race should be an exciting one.

“It will be one of the largest super late model races in Northeast Michigan,” Tony said.

This year will see the father-son racers JR and Tyler Roahrig and Phil and Andy Bozell, and brothers Todd and Tony Rosebrugh duking it out.

The race boasts a purse in excess of $20,000, one of the largest purses offered at the speedway. The winner of the race will receive $5,000, with $2,500 going to the runner-up. Every racer who starts will receive $700.

The speedway will have an open practice June 29 from 5-9 p.m. The practices are free to attend.

On race day June 30, gates open at 4:30 p.m., time trials start at 5 p.m. and the green flag is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. Cost of admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $8 for children and children 5 and younger are free. Coolers are welcome, but glass bottles are not allowed. Coolers are subject to inspection.

Whittemore Speedway is located on M-65 in Whittemore. For more information, contact the speedway at 989-756-2280.
