Residents, travelers in Arenac County asked to be aware of bicycle race traffic

ARENAC COUNTY — Residents and travels through Arenac County May 12 are being asked to be on alert for bicycle traffic due to the Coast to Coast Gravel Grinder Bicycle Race.

According to the event press release, an estimated 350 bicyclists will leave from the Saginaw Bay area east of Standish and will travel 210 miles to Ludington.

Riders will be leaving at approximately 6:12 a.m. and must depart from the area by 8:15 a.m.

Due to the nature of the race, bicyclists will be traveling down more than a dozen primary and secondary roadways.

“Bicycles are looked at in much the same as motor vehicles,” Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre said. “They have all the rights and are subject to all the laws that are applicable to a vehicle.”

Bicycles must mind the same rules of the road and ride on the right hand side of the road, closest to the fog line. Bicyclists must keep right unless passing.

“Motorists need to pay extra attention for bicyclists and motorcyclists as the warmer weather approaches,” McIntyre said. “More than a year ago, we had a bicyclist killed because of the negligence of the driver in a motor vehicle.”

McIntyre said drivers may face criminal charges if involved in an accident.
