Marie Elizabeth Berry, 97, of Sterling Heights, formerly of Omer, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, in Sterling Heights.

Marie was born June 30, 1920, in Saginaw, the eldest child of Arthur Edward Ross and Ruth Axford (Stuart). She married Howard Taft Berry April 1, 1939, in Hesperia, and they raised a family of six children on the Berry homestead in Arenac County. Marie was a homemaker who loved to sew; she made many Raggedy Ann dolls and quilts for her grandchildren. She had been a longtime employee of Forward’s Restaurant of Standish and Standish Hospital, and later worked as a shipping clerk at Magline in Pinconning. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Omer for many years. Marie was a member of the Alexander Macomb Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1991.

Marie enjoyed traveling to Alabama and Florida in the winters to spend time with her family after her retirement. She always enjoyed a good card game of Merino rummy with the family. Marie spent time in the summer traveling in Northern Michigan with her family. She loved a good party and was always at every family event. Marie especially loved all the little children and would always take care of them. She would pack up her car and take as many children as she could and away they would go to “Snoopy Park” for a day at the beach. Her cinnamon rolls were her expertise in baking. She loved to bake and can fruit and vegetables. After the death of her husband, she moved to Romeo and finally to Sterling Heights for her aging years. For more than 20 years Marie enjoyed spending her time in Alabama with her son Daniel.

Marie is survived by three sons, Daniel (Rhonda) Berry of Dothan, Ala., Robin (Janet) Berry of Omer and Don Red (Stacy) Berry of Shelby Township; two daughters, Ruth Marie Berry and Virginia (Joseph) Cottone, both of Sterling Heights; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Arthur (Jan) Ross of Citrus Springs, Fla., and David (Judy) Berry of Sterling.

Marie was predeceased by her husband, Howard, who died Feb. 9, 1976; her eldest son, William H.; her grandson, William W. “Billy”; and sisters, Virginia Witte and Irene Restainer.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish Chapel with the Rev. Reed Schroer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Omer. The family will greet family and friends from 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, until time of services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Faith Lutheran Church or Ye Olde Courthouse in Omer.
