OMER — A 70-year-old man was beaten and robbed at gunpoint late June 10, according to Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre.

McIntyre said four suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the crime.

“The deputies were dispatched in reference to an armed robbery,” he said. “Deputies contacted the victim, who was suffering from severe injuries.”

The victim was camping in the Omer area when he was reportedly approached by the four suspects before being beaten and robbed. The suspects were reportedly armed with a pellet gun.

McIntyre said the crime occurred at approximately 9 p.m. June 10, on River Road near Omer.

As part of the investigation into the alleged crime, a search for the suspects was conducted by the sheriff’s department, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police and the Michigan State Police.

“They were able to locate the suspect vehicle, as well as the four suspects,” McIntyre said. “We were able to take those four suspects into custody.”

McIntyre said the suspects were apprehended without any issues.

The victim was transported to St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish by MMR for life-threatening injuries before being transferred to Saginaw.

Three male suspects — Joshua Giles, 20, Paul Giles, 19, and James Hassenzahl, 39, have been arraigned in district court on several charges including armed robbery, armed robbery with the intent to do bodily harm, possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license. A female suspect was apprehended but has yet to be arraigned as of press time. McIntyre said the female is lodged in Bay County Jail and the male suspects are lodged in Arenac County Jail.

These men were caught and arrested. I am glad to hear that. One of their charges was possession of marijuana?? I thought marijuana was legalized now? Isn't that why we have all these marijuana growing sites in AuGres township? How on earth do we have double standards on this drug!

No double standards. You have to have your card to be legal.

Connie, were is the compassion for the 70 yr victim they almost beat to death. These 4 hopefully will be put away for a long time. Unless they have a medical card marijuana is still illegal in Michigan. As far as Au Gres have all these grow sites, they are just proposed sites.
