Happiness is key to longevity

STANDISH — Happiness is the secret to a long life, according to centenarian Margaret Framke.

Framke celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her family, friends and caregivers at St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital’s skilled nursing facility.

“To be happy,” Margaret said, when asked what the secret to longevity is. “I woke up this morning and I was happy and ready for a celebration.”

Margaret was born May 10, 1918, and grew up farming. After she met and married her husband Arnold Framke in 1937, the two went on to have their own farm in Munger where they raised their three children — Sybil, Sandra and Stuart. Arnold passed away in 2001, after the two celebrated 64 years of marriage. Together, Margaret and Arnold established a lineage of nearly three dozen grandchildren.

Margaret’s son Stuart Framke said she was always a hard worker, and he believes that played a role in her long life.

During the festivities at the facility, Margaret was greeted by students and staff from the Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District, who sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

Margaret was all smiles and stunned by the crowd in attendance and the gifts that were bestowed on her, including her favorite mini blueberry pies.
