Halloween fun to sprout at Omer day care

OMER — The Li’l Sprouts Child Development Center is inviting people of all ages to its trunk or treat and health and safety fair for the second year Oct. 24.

Daycare employees and community members will have trunks lined up in the U-shaped driveway, decorated with various themes. Last year themes included Crayons, Spider-Man, The Little Mermaid and more.

“Some trunks do games with the kids while others just hand out candy or goodies,” organizer Desaray Stein said.

The free event will also feature a petting zoo with exotic animals such as camels and zebras. Rite Aid representatives and direct sales consultants will be handing out items, and Girl Scout Troop 50685 will be hosting games.

As part of the health and safety fair, a fire truck will make an appearance, as well as K9 Jagger and Deputy Eric Hribek. Michigan State Police Community Service Trooper Shane Noble will be talking about bike safety, and Globe Fire Sprinkler representatives will present on fire safety. The health department will also be offering free hearing and vision screenings.

Stein said she created the event last year as part of an advocacy project for a class she was taking at Ferris State University. Stein, an assistant preschool director at the day care and director at the attached foster closet, is pursuing her degree in early childhood development. Last year’s event was a success, with about 150 children attending.

“We’re just providing a safe, fun environment where kids can interact with people from the community they may see, both health and safety,” she said.

Stein also noted that the trunk or treat is for people of any age and most of the adults dress up too.

Those interested in hosting a trunk can call Stein at 989-698-6876.

Trunks are set up around 3:30 p.m., and the event is held from 4-6 p.m. L’il Sprouts Child Development Center is located at 2801 Sterling Rd., Omer.
