George R. McLeod

Died Dec. 15, 2018

George R. McLeod, 82, died Dec. 15, 2018, at his Pinckney home. George grew up in Southfield and was a longtime resident of Sterling and of Berkley.

From his early 20s, George worked for the city of Oak Park in many public works positions. He retired in 1990 from the city as operations supervisor.

For many years, he was a weekend resident of Sterling, moving full-time to the area after leaving the city of Oak Park. During retirement, he worked at the Standish Hardware and Pine River Golf Course. His great joy was handing out Tootsie Roll suckers to the children who came to his Christmas tree farm on Bishop Road. He looked forward every year to seeing the families that made selecting one of his trees a part of their Christmas tradition.

George was married to Alice McLeod for 62 years. He is survived by his wife and their four children. His children and their spouses are Mary Ellen (John) Mohn of Pinckney, David (Juli) McLeod of Ypsilanti, Raymond (Melanie) McLeod of White Lake and Margaret (Matt) Watson of Berkley. His legacy includes 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Harry McLeod of Southfield; and sisters-in-law, Margy Patchin and Ellen Bowden, both of Traverse City.

Family and friends will celebrate George’s life during a gathering in his honor from 1-4 p.m. Dec. 30 in Pinckney. Call 734-407-9528 for more information.
