Earla J. (Larson) Hutchinson

Died Sept. 25, 2018

Earla Jean (Larson) Hutchinson, 72, passed away unexpectedly Sept. 25, 2018, near Circle, Alaska.

Earla was born in Ypsilanti, the eldest daughter of the late Earl and Marion Larson, and grew up in Standish, attending Grace Episcopal Church. In 1966 she went on a church mission to Alaska to teach Sunday school in the village of Tanana, along the Yukon River. She also traveled to Circle and met her future husband, Dick Hutchinson. They married in 1967 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2017. Earla attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks, earned her teaching degree and taught students in Circle and in area communities that she could reach by bush plane. She was proud to serve on the Yukon Flats school board, and she was a force to be reckoned with, cutting through political red tape to serve her students. She and Dick ran the H.C. Company Store in Circle, providing a valuable resource of gas, fuel, groceries and phone at the end of the Steese Highway on the banks of the Yukon River. They brought electrical and phone service to this remote location.

She is survived by her husband, Dick; brother, Dean (Janet) Larson of Fair Haven; children, Hutch (Sandy) and Krista Hutchinson (significant other David); and grandchildren, Seth, Helen, Tristyn, Liam, Aksel, Gauge, Signe, Amanda, Dave and Andrew, who will miss their Grammy very much

A celebration of life will be in Fairbanks Oct. 7. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Porter Heart and Vascular at 1650 Cowles St., Fairbanks, Alaska 99701.
