Coaches Classic returns for 33rd year to raise money for SSC athletics

STANDISH — When golfers tee off in the 33rd annual Coaches Classic at the Pine River Golf Course July 15, their day on the links will help provide several odds and ends needed by Standish-Sterling sports programs throughout the year.

Organizer Paul Walderzak said there are several ways the $75 per person or $300 per team registration monies are used at SSC.

“The biggest thing that it’s done is that it’s helped to fund the weight room and training programs,” he said. “Equipment that we need to pick up training-wise for the weight room or the field house, most of that stuff has been purchased with Coaches Classic money. In that sense, the weight room is open to everybody, so that affects all of the kids.”

T-shirts, meals and the postseason football banquet are also funded by the event, Walderzak said.

“For the banquets at the end of the year, the kids don’t pay,” he said. “We pay their end out of the Coaches Classic. There are a lot of areas there that it goes to.”

Along with a day of golf, there will be hole prizes, skins, hot box raffles and 50-50 drawings, Walderzak said. A meal will be served following the scramble, which is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Teams can be registered as men’s, women’s or mixed, and first-place trophies will be awarded to the winning men’s and women’s teams.

The Coaches Classic is one of the longest-running golf outings of its type in the state, Walderzak said. For the majority of the three-plus decades, the conditions have been cooperative for it, he said.

“In 33 years we haven’t been rained out one time,” he said. “It goes relatively fast and what’s really nice is we get a lot of guys that graduated from our school system and they come back and play every year. A lot of people look forward to this.”
