Annual spring bazaar to return March 16

STANDISH — Shopping at the St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital spring skilled nursing bazaar scheduled for March 16 will help make possible various outings throughout the year for rehabilitating patients and long-term care residents.

Rehab and Recreational Therapy Manager Lisa Lemke said the bazaar is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the skilled nursing hallways and cafeteria. She said the bazaar is at capacity with 25 vendors registered. Vendor fees provide funding for skilled nursing activities, Lemke said. Skilled nursing patients take nine or 10 out-trips annually, Lemke said.

“Every month it’s a little bit different,” she said. “We try to do the local casino, the bowling alley. We do the Ogemaw County Fair. We go to Eden Fields now and do co-organized activities. If they have entertainment coming in we may go there. We’ll go to a Loons game once a year. What we get is the Arenac Transit bus, so we have to pay for the bus. If it’s out of the local Arenac community we have to pay on an hourly basis, so it’s a little bit more costly.”

Getting out and about is important for the skilled nursing patients, Lemke said.

“It’s definitely a need that they request, because it’s good for them to see outside functions and be a part of the community,” she said.

Many people in the community are not aware of what the skilled nursing wing of the hospital provides, Lemke said.

“People come for rehab, but it’s also a long-term care facility,” she said. “We do have residents that stay and live here in long-term care. A lot of people don’t realize that.”

Lunch will be available in the cafeteria during the bazaar, Lemke said. For more information, call 989-846-3446.
