What’s your passion?

What are you passionate about?

Is it your job, working on your car, having a spectacular lawn? Everyone has something they are passionate about.

Just think about it for a minute. What do you really love? Please, take a minute and visualize it. Got it? Let’s continue.

For me it’s a number of things. Sitting in the woods on a cool fall night hunting, opening that new video game for the first time, playing basketball in the driveway after dark with the lights on, and seeing my girlfriend’s smile when I see her after a long drive.

Those are the things that make my bad days good and my good days great.

But how often do we actually get to experience these things that bring us joy? I know that for me it’s not nearly enough, not even close. Most of the time it’s my fault too.

Instead of going outside to play basketball, I sit on the couch and watch the Lakers, or “The Office,” if basketball is not on.

As I think more about this topic, I wonder if I am settling, rather than motivating myself.

I mean, after working all day it can be hard to get out and play ball; it’s just nicer to relax. But when I’m sitting at work, I sometimes catch myself thinking about hunting and basketball.

Sometimes I find myself so busy with hundreds of different things that I get overwhelmed. When I take the time to slow down and take a breath, I come back to some of those moments that bring me joy.

The fact is, we all need to have something to be passionate about. There are some things we are more passionate about than others.

Sometimes we have to sacrifice the things we love, to make room for the new things that can make us happy.

Just don’t forget those things. Go back to them from time to time. If there is a park you would visit all the time but now you don’t have the time, take a few hours and go back to that park again.

I know that I used to love staying up until 2 a.m. playing my Xbox. I don’t get to do that very much anymore. But whenever I have a free Friday night, you can bet I will be there.

I have decided that I am going to make sure to do at least one thing I am passionate about every week.

Right now it’s hunting season, so I will be sure to get out there as much as I can. If I can’t make it out into the woods, then I will go shoot some hoops.

We should all take some time every day to do something that brings us joy.

Relax and watch football, or take your wife or girlfriend out to that chick-flick she wants to see.

I love writing my columns, but I am going to go play some basketball.

I'm passionate about a lot of things. Fishing, reading, spending time with my family, travelling, and camping are just a few of the things I really enjoy. I'm also very passionate about the work I do. I'm the coordinator for the Michigan Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking. Reducing underage drinking is something that should be a high priority for everyone in their community. Just as you have, I've seen too many young people's lives cut short or ruined because of their use of alcohol.
