What's up with the deputization?
Letter to the editor
I am writing in response to the article in the 2/27/09 edition of the Arenac Independent regarding the Arenac County Sheriff Department and the Saginaw-Chippewa Tribal Police Department. Within the article there were several quotes from those involved that “a working partnership” was in the works and would be implemented soon. When is soon? And will it be soon enough? I understand there are several areas of “red tape” that need to be addressed for legality reasons, but how long are the citizens of Arenac County supposed to wait? Since the deputization of the tribal officers has been revoked they are basically handcuffed in the county unless they are on tribal grounds. How would you like to be the citizen who calls 911 and has to wait until a county car can be found, when there is a tribal police office on the scene that can’t help because he isn’t deputized? If you think this is a far-fetched idea, it’s not! This is a reality that most people don’t know about. Getting the tribal police officers deputized should not be an issue of who is in charge, or who does a better job. It’s about protecting the citizens of Arenac County period. Put the political agendas aside and get the extra protection that is available. Please we need it.
