STANDISH — A group of snowmobilers are about to try their hand at golf.
The Fourth Annual Wertz Warriors Golf Scramble, benefiting the Special Olympics of Michigan Winter Games, will be taking place Saturday, July 30 at Pine River Golf Club in Standish.
Jack Irving, support crew member of the Wertz Warriors, said he is always amazed at the support the Warriors receive from the area.
“We get a lot of support from the area,” he said. “We have many people who return to help us every year. We are so happy for their support.”
Jack’s wife, Colleen Irving, said the Wertz Warriors hold two golf outings to raise money for the Special Olympics. The second golf outing will be held at Knoll View in AuGres on Aug. 27. She added that the golf outings are one of the biggest fundraisers the group has during the year.
“These are a big part of our fundraisers,” she said. “We also get great contributions from (Standish and Sterling) elementary schools, as well as (Standish-Sterling Middle School).”
Colleen said that the Wertz Warriors have continued to gain more funding over the past three years. Jack said the snowmobile club raised just over $35,000 last year.
“I don’t think that we are going to be able to reach that mark this year,” he said. “That was the top of the mountain.”
Jack said scheduling conflicts may lower the turnout for this year’s outing.
“We are still going to have a great year,” he said.
Jack said the group also hosts two poker runs and two trap shooting events in the county. He added that he, Colleen, and member Joe Gudobba are always looking for sponsors.
“If you want to do this right, you need to be out there (looking for sponsors) six days a week,” he said. “We don’t let anyone slide. We ask our doctors, our dentists, anyone who might be willing to support our cause.”
Jack said he knows this year’s outing will be a great event.
“It always is a great event,” he said. “The only thing that could make it bad is the weather.”
The cost to play is $70 per person or $280 per team. Jack said prizes for top teams include stays at resorts and concert tickets.
Anyone looking to golf in the outing can call Colleen at 989-654-3403 or Gudobba at 989-836-2574 for more information.
