WP wrestlers take second at home invite

WHITTEMORE — Whittemore-Prescott gained some payback Saturday at its home invitational, going 4-1 to take second place to Kingsley while beating some teams against which they'd had little luck the past couple of seasons.

The Cardinals beat Rudyard 45-36, Mt. Morris 63-18, Midland B 53-27 and Rogers City 40-39 while losing to Kingsley 60-13.

The Cardinals had lost to Rogers City twice this season. Last year W-P lost to Mt. Morris and was shut out 83-0 by Kingsley.

"The boys were coming off a rough outing against Pinny and Bay City Central," said W-P coach Dan Seefeld. "They worked their butts off at practice all week and reaped the rewards on Saturday."

Chancey Rattie (135), Kyle Hensley (189) and Koeddie Prince (285) all went 5-0 for the day, with Jacob Panetta (125), Greg Draves (140) and Brandon Hall each going 4-1. Scott Garnett (145 and 152) was 3-2. Freshman Kyle Draves (103) also got a victory over a Mt. Morris wrestler that pinned him earlier in the year.

"Koeddie is off to a great start, going 6-1 this week and 5-0 in front of the home crowd," Seefeld said. "Kyle Hensley is showing improved stamina and was rewarded with a 5-0 day at home. Jacob Panetta was the standout wrestlers of the week, winning five of seven matches, including a nail-bitter at Pinny and a last-chance pin for a team victory against Rogers City."

In the Rogers City match, freshman Cody Lucynski avoided a pin to a Rogers City opponent, who had pinned him twice earlier in the year. That kept the Cards in the match, trailing 39-34, to leave the door open for Panetta to win the match with his pin.

"(We) knew our freshmen would have to step up to get the win," Seefeld said.

The Cards (13-15) next competes Saturday, Jan. 31 at Gaylord's Northern Michigan Invitational.
