It’s finally here, the game I have been waiting to see for a lonnnnnggg time! Standish-Sterling will FINALLY face Whittemore-Prescott in football.

Now I may be a little overly excited about this game, but let me give you some background as to why:

I graduated from Whittemore-Prescott in 2005, and for 12 long years I’ve heard my mom talk about how wonderful SSC was, and after 35 years of teaching, she is STILL talking about how wonderful they are.

I get it, old habits die hard.

My brothers both played football for W-P, donning the number 71. One brother, Nick, went to the Silverdome and lost to Montrose in the state finals and the other brother, Tim, was on the state championship team in 2000. Through all of this, my mom still took SSC’s side, too.

We lived in a divided house.

Now let me get one thing straight, working for the paper, I am in NO WAY taking sides in this battle. I have love for both teams.

I did an internship at Standish-Sterling and substitute taught there for a year, and along the way made some pretty great friends.

But there comes a point where you just have to add a little fuel to the fire, and this is it.

Throughout my subbing days, I heard over and over, “Oh yeah, if we had the chance to play W-P we would decimate them.” (Sure, I may have over-exaggerated for effect, but you get my point).

For years, I have put up with not only students telling me this, but friends as well.

Now, I know I’ve been giving SSC a harder time than W-P, but W-P isn’t innocent in all of this either.

Just as I’ve heard SSC kids tell me that they would “decimate” W-P, I’ve heard W-P kids say the same.

I know this because I was one.

This game has been 26 years in the making. What would this week be without a little fire to get both teams excited?!

With only days to the big game, I guess I’ll do the right thing and wish both teams the best of luck!
