Vietnam Veterans award scholarship

AUGRES — Jennie Johnson has had a respect for the United States Armed Services her whole life. Both of her parents served in the Navy, and her grandfather is a Vietnam veteran.

So when it came time for the Vietnam Veterans of America, Arenac County Chapter 390, to give out their annual $500 scholarship, it only made sense for them to choose Johnson.

Johnson, an AuGres-Sims graduate, said her grandfather, Richard Johnson, served in Vietnam.

“This scholarship means a lot,” she said. “It’s really going to help me.”

Chapter member Charlie Morton said this is the 21st year the chapter has given out the scholarship.

“We like kids, and we like to help them out,” Morton said. “We give the scholarship to students who apply and have relatives who were in the Vietnam war.”

He said that over the years, Chapter 390 has given more than $18,000 in scholarship money.

“We want to (send) a positive message of Vietnam veterans,” he said.

He said Johnson was the only student to apply this year.

“I found out I won on the night of graduation,” Johnson said. “I was very excited.”

Johnson said she also received three other scholarships that will go toward her future at Western Michigan University.

“She is a sweetheart deserving of an education,” Morton said. “It makes me happy to see good kids doing good things.”

Johnson said she is going to school to become a physician assistant in interdisciplinary health. She said she is thankful for the scholarship.

“When I met (the chapter members) I told them thank you for the freedoms, and thank you for the opportunity to further my education,” Johnson said.

Morton said the chapter plans on continuing the scholarship program, but he said it has become harder over the years for the chapter to find students who qualify.

“We appreciate the generosity and help of the community,” he said. “We will keep it going.”
