Time to crush cancer

Relay for Life kicks off April 16

ARENAC COUNTY — Each year the Arenac County Relay for Life (RFL) Committee rounds up teams, donors and sponsors to wage an all out two-day war against cancer, but this year the RFL army is expected to be mightier than ever when it kicks off its annual campaign on April 16 at the Standish-Sterling Central High School commons.

“We are goaled for 30 teams this year,” said Arenac County RFL Chairperson Dawn McNamara, adding last year there were 17 teams that solicited funds to fight for a cure for cancer.

At an RFL meeting on March 26 at the Standish-Sterling Central High School (SSC), RFL Executive Director Kelly Kimball said 21 teams had already signed up for this year’s relay, which is July 11 and 12 at SSC – a new, earlier date than past years’ events, but McNamara says the new date is appropriate, since she expects RFL to be completely overhauled this year.

“You will see a whole new relay this year,” she said. “There is so much energy. It’s like everybody’s been infused.

“Everybody just has a new attitude, that’s it.”

And although the kickoff is still days away, McNamara says funds have begun to roll in.

“This year we’re approaching $3,000 in fundraising already,” she said, adding interested community members can track RFL fundraising on the group’s Web site www.relayforlife.org/arenaccountymi.

Kimball says RFL teams can also look for fundraising ideas on the Web site.

According to McNamara, the actual kickoff event at SSC will thoroughly explain RFL; including defining the actual mission of relay, informing community members about starting a team, fundraising and team building advice.

“We will touch on each and every aspect of it (RFL),” McNamara said.

Other items discussed at the RFL Committee meeting on March 26 included the possibility of a car show at the RFL event to draw more interest and participation, campsite decoration, inviting cancer survivors to kickoff to be honored and the possibility of a Mr. Relay competition, where Kimball says a male from each team dresses up like a woman to take part in a “beauty” contest. She added RFL will also hold a new team meeting on April 23.
