From Standish to AuGres, and back to Omer and Sterling, there is no doubt that there are some great people in Arenac County.

From our local firemen and sheriff’s offices, to the high school coaches and city council members, this is a great county.

Sure, there is a casino, great hunting land and beautiful scenery, but to really know Arenac County you need to dig down and meet the people. Because the people of this county make it what it is.

It not easy to be a leader during this time in our country, but somehow people here make the best of it.

I know that not everyone is perfect and occasionally I have run into some folks who did not have the best personalities. But for the most part everyone in this area is more than willing to go out of his or her way to be helpful and courteous.

Since Standish Maximum Security Prison closed, the future has looked rocky for the City of Standish, but somehow people and businesses are still here. Sure, there are problems and issues, but name one place in Michigan that does not have problems of their own. The city is still here, and won’t be going anywhere soon.

The area has taken a hit over the past few months in education. Tough cuts have been made to districts across Arenac County. But strong leaders and good superintendents have continued to push back and we still see good things coming from our area students.

It’s easy for people to make snide comments about how wrong things are and the number of issues that face this area. But we need to keep our heads held high and think positively.

Don’t judge a book by its cover; at least the book on Arenac County. Because when you open it, you will find there is more to this place that what the naked eye sees.
