Teen Summit promotes healthy living

AUGRES — Teen Summit 2010, an all-day event for middle and high school students at Arenac Eastern and AuGres-Sims, brought 387 students together on May 6 to hear guest speakers and learn about alternatives to taking drugs or drinking alcohol.

The event took students through small group sessions to teach them about maintaining physical and mental health, and the second half of the day consisted of break-out sessions about “natural highs,” which are activities such as candy making, art projects and science experiments — activities that can be good alternatives to turning to drugs or alcohol.

“We had great support from the community,” said Jil Gould, the program coordinator from AuGres-Sims.

Gould said the students raised enough money to pay for the special speaker, Jim Tuman, as well as the food and special “swag bags” that each student received at the end of the day.

She also said that this is only the second year that AGS and AE have come together to do a joint program.

“It went well last year, so it was our year to host it,” Gould said.

Barb Hunter, the person responsible for coordinating the program at AE, said that the Teen Summit was a program that started in the 1990s and lasted for 10 years. It was only three or four years ago that the school decided to bring it back and subsequently add AGS.

“We decided that we would like to try and expand it,” Hunter said. “It’s a pretty big undertaking.’

Both Hunter and Gould said that most of the students who attended the event have had a positive response.

“We’ve gotten really good feedback,” Hunter said.

“They all seemed to enjoy it,” Gould said.

Hunter added that she would like to see students from AGS and AE work together even more next year to put on the event.
