Summer Slam coming to AuGres in August
AuGRES — The date for the Fourth Annual Summer SlamVolleyball Tournament in AuGres has changed as the event looks to expand this year.
Jeri Christie, athletic director for AuGres-Sims High School and head of the event, said the tournament has evolved over the past few years. The most notable change is that the funds raised will go toward a scholarship fund in memory of Ashley Irwin.
“Last year we donated money from the event and created the Ashley Irwin memorial scholarship fund,” Christie said. “We raised $500 for the scholarship.”
Irwin died in a car accident in 2008, before entering her senor year at AGS where she would have been captain of the volleyball team.
Christie said she cancelled the Summer Slam in 2008. The tournament, typically held on Labor Day weekend, will be held Aug. 6 this year to allow more local college students to participate.
“Ashley was such a great kid,” she said. “Volleyball was her number one love and she was ready to achieve all of her hopes and dreams. We just want to hold this event in her honor.”
Before Irwin’s death, the Summer Slam was held as a fundraiser for the AGS volleyball program. Now, Christie said, every dollar raised will go toward the scholarship.
“If we make $1,000, we will put $1,000 into the fund,” she said.
The volleyball tournament will feature 4-person teams divided into different categories. Christie said divisions are based on the number of teams that enter.
“We hope to have groups for high schoolers, adult co-ed teams and men’s teams,” she said. “We will see what the turnout is like and go from there.”
Christie said ages 13 and older are eligible to compete in the event and the cost is $15 per person for the round robin tournament.
Another new twist to this year’s Summer Slam is the addition of a horseshoe tournament. Christie said that horseshoe competitors can sign up in 2-person teams.
“It is still $15 for people to sign up to compete in the horseshoe tournament, but if people would like to compete in both (tournaments) it will only cost $25 rather than $30,” she said.
Christie said she hopes to see the Summer Slam continue to grow.
“We want to have this be as big as it can be,” she said. “We have even had discussions about adding a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the future.”
Christie said the Summer Slam would not be possible if not for a committee of Ashley Irwin’s siblings, James, Emily, and Chelsea, as well as her boyfriend, John Bender, who help to organize the event.
Christie said the registration deadline for the Summer Slam is July 15, but late registrations will be accepted.
“We have that deadline so we can give people t-shirts,” she said.
The 2011 Summer Slam will be held at the AuGres City Park.
