STERLING — When friends Cheyenne Schafer and Hannah Carrier decided to share their birthday party this year, they also decided to take it as a chance to give back to their community.

Hannah and Cheyenne, both 9 years old, have birthdays only nine days apart, and so decided to simply have one big birthday party for the two of them. They both feel they are pretty lucky to have all the things they have, however, and were interested in a way to help out the less fortunate.

So when the two girls gave out their birthday invitations, they made a note to ask that guests do not bring gifts for them, but rather canned goods and other items that could be donated to the Sterling United Methodist Church’s food pantry.

“We just thought that we had too many gifts,” Hannah said. “So we thought, because I always work at the food pantry, why not donate food to the pantry?”

Michelle Schafer, Cheyenne’s mom, said some of the parents were confused by the invitations and ended up calling to make sure it was alright. Ultimately, however, about 10 girls from Sterling and Standish elementaries donated goods for the food pantry during their party March 8, and the girls brought a total of four bags and a box of supplies to the church March 27, the day of the church’s monthly food pantry night.

Hannah said while she has been volunteering at the food pantry since her family moved into the area a year ago, this was Cheyenne’s first time. Both girls enjoyed the opportunity to help out those in need, however.

“I would encourage others to do it,” Cheyenne said.

Hannah said they are interested in doing the same thing for their birthday party next year.
