STERLING — The annual health fair hosted by the Sterling Area Health Center is expected to have more vendors, more prizes and more attendees this year when it is held Aug. 14 at the Deep River Township Park.

Danyelle Wagner, the event organizer, said in the past there were around 10 to 20 organizations on hand. That number could double this year, she said.

“We have about 40 organizations coming,” she said. “We’ll have anything from Michigan Works to FirstMerit to the Department of Human Services.”

Wagner said the health center increased its promotion, advertising the event not only in Arenac County, but Iosco and Bay counties as well.

“We’re anticipating between 300 and 500 people, so we’re hoping it’s going to be pretty big,” she said.

Patrons of the health fair will be able to receive several services free of charge, including dental and vision screenings and blood pressure checks. Wagner said there is also a free bike raffle for children and several free raffles for adults.

“On top of that, the 40 organizations usually have free items to give away as well,” she said.

Wagner said the only restriction on the raffles will be that the bike winners will need to be present.

“The only thing that we’re going to put restrictions on is that since we are giving away bikes from Walmart, the children are going to have to be present to win the bikes,” she said.

Pamphlets will be distributed to help people who attend figure out where different organizations and activities are set up throughout the park, Wagner said. Hot dogs and beverages will be served during the health fair.

Wagner said the health fair has been held for several years, and that it serves as a way for the Sterling Area Health Center to show its appreciation for the community support it receives.

“The reason for the health fair is to basically give back to the community — to show appreciation for the business they’re giving the center, and also to promote other organizations as well and their services to the community,” she said.

The health fair is scheduled to run from 1-5 p.m. The Deep River Township Park is located at 525 E. State St. in Sterling.
