Standish residents turn down police millage

Moffat Township millages approved, Bay-Arenac ISD millage turned down

ARENAC COUNTY – Voters in Standish voted down a proposed police millage increase on Tuesday, with a vote of 54 for and 70 against in an election that saw light turnout.

The proposed millage would have increased the amount of money the police get for operational purposes by two mills, but was voted down in all three of the city’s wards. It would have raised an estimated $77,937.15.

Elsewhere in the county, the 154 Moffat Township residents who voted approved two proposed millage renewals through 2015 for the fire department and for the township’s roads.

The fire millage is for the purposes of operating, maintaining, and repairing the fire department, and is expected to raise $94,000 in the first year. It was approved 101 to 53.

The road millage will go towards repairing, maintaining, and constructing roads within the township’s limits. This millage was approved 96 to 58.

Another millage to increase the funding for the Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District’s special education programs went up for residents of Arenac, Northern Bay, and Gladwin counties. Arenac County residents voted against the millage at a ratio of nearly two-to-one, with the final results within the county being 320 for and 664 against. The millage was defeated in Bay and Gladwin counties as well. In Bay County, 5,307 voted for the measure, while 7,902 voted against. In Gladwin, 18 voted for the millage and 42 voted against.

If approved, the proposed educational millage would have increased the existing millage by one mill for a 20-year period to 2030 for the purpose of educating students with disabilities. An estimated $3, 496,018 would have been raised.

Other races in Standish and Omer for city positions were unopposed. In Standish, incumbent Mark Winslow won another term in office with 105 votes, and Violet Cook, Doug Ireland, and Charles Macaulay each won city council seats with 25, 42, and 42 votes, respectively.

In Omer, Alice Sproule won the mayorship with 40 votes, Sue Oliver won the city clerk position with 41 votes, and Joan Steward won the city treasurer position with 41 votes as well. Larry Daly, James Steward, and Revia Stewart each won seats on the Omer city council with 36, 39, and 36 votes respectively, and Jill Eyre won a partial two-year term on the council with 36 votes.

The Standish-Sterling school board also saw its candidates running unopposed, with Denny Kolevar and Annette Ratajczak winning full four-year terms with 470 and 451 votes, respectively, and Patricia Kipfmiller winning a partial one-year term with 503 votes.

The Arenac Eastern school board also had council seats open, but there were no candidates running, and no votes were counted.

In total 994 residents of Arenac County voted, out of 11,569 registered voters.

Kudos to the voters for turning down the ridiculous police millage. That thing was a sham money-grab by the council and PD from the get-go.

I really felt that this millage for city police was not really approached very well, it was not explained real well, it sounded like even if it went down, the officer would still be on duty, I just think that our sheriff does fine with his department and adequately covers the city as well. I see county cars sitting where the old movie house used to be, watching traffic, and doing the basic patrols that are needed in a city of our size. I can honestly say what I pay in property taxes, water and sewer, I think I truly am paying enough to live in the city and I feel I will be safe with our sheriff in charge. I am truly thankful for all the services provided by our city, but think there is a limit to what I will accept on my tax bill.

The city could save money by not letting their chief drive the city police car home to Linwood every day. With the price of gas that would really add up fast. The Sheriffs dept. does a great job patroling the city, so there really isn't a need for the City Police. You hardly ever see him anyway.Use that extra money on something useful.
