STANDISH — The City of Standish might soon be the new owners of the Arenac County Park, located on Airpark Drive next to the fairgrounds.

The City Council discussed acquiring the property at its Oct. 20 regular meeting, but decided that more information is needed before any actions are taken.

Arenac County Board of Commissioners Vice-Chairman Joseph Sancimino proposed transferring ownership of the park to the city. He said the city would only have to pay $1 to purchase and transfer the land. However, the city would have to pay for the title for the land, which Interim City Manager Curtis Hillman estimated would cost “a couple hundred dollars.”

Sancimino asked that the city council draft a letter of intent to present to county by Nov. 1, so that the county can start transferring the property. Sancimino said the process would take “a couple of months.”

After discussing the costs associated with the park’s upkeep and whether the swing sets on the property would have to be replaced with new equipment, the council voted on a motion to draft a letter of intent to present to the county, but Mayor Mark Winslow recommended postponing the motion until the council is completely sure it wants to proceed with the transfer, citing that more research is needed before making an official decision.

The council also heard an update on the construction of the Standish Fire Department’s new fire barn. Councilmember Doug Ireland said construction is moving quickly, as the main obstacles remaining are painting the floor and getting electricity installed. A decision to use epoxy resin to paint the floor is still in discussion.

Hillman said electricity should be installed by Nov. 4, noting that the construction of the building should also be complete at that time. The council hopes to open the barn in November, though an exact date was not discussed.
