St. Mary’s Skilled Nursing hosting annual Christmas Bazaar
STANDISH — People who need to buy a Christmas gift for a crafty person may find the right item during the St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility’s annual Christmas Bazaar Nov. 8.
Jan Doerr, SMMSH Recreational Therapy Manager, said there will be all sorts of hand-made crafts for sale at the bazaar.
“We have 25 vendors and all items are homemade,” she said. “So it’s a good place to be if people are shopping for Christmas ideas or craft ideas.”
According to Doerr, patrons of past bazaars can expect to see familiar vendors as well as several new vendors.
Doerr said the bazaar is a fundraiser that helps pay for trips taken by residents of the hospital’s skilled nursing facility. She said she sits down with the residents of the facility each year and they come up with different ideas for out trips. Doerr said the skilled nursing residents and staff try to get out once a month.
“In June they go to a Loons baseball game,” she said. “This month they went on a fall color tour and out to lunch. We usually go to Bronners. We’ll go out for Christmas shopping.”
Funds are raised at the bazaar through a $20 vendor fee and from lunch sales. Doerr said lunch costs $5.
The Christmas Bazaar is one of three annual skilled nursing fundraisers. Doerr said there is also a spring bazaar and the Caring Baskets fundraiser annually.
“Those three events usually are enough to cover all of our expenses for our out trips,” she said.
The Christmas Bazaar is held in the Skilled Nursing Facility wing of the hospital. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
