PINCONNING – The Pinconning varsity volleyball team went 5-5 in the Northeast Michigan Conference a year ago and finished the season with a sub par 14-24 record.
But the Spartans were young and coach Brandon Little heads into the 2009 campaign with a lot more experience than last season and he is hopeful that leads to a good season.
“I’m hoping to be a better defensive team than last year,” Little said. “We had very few seniors last year. We had taller girls but never really learned defense.
“This year they know how to play defense, and mentally they know the game more.”
Little welcomes back several seniors who played as juniors last year, including three-year player Chelsea Gruszynski, who will anchor the Spartans’ attack at setter.
Also back from the senior class are Emme Buranczyk, Kelsey Beck and Sarah Lijewski. Buranczyk is an outside-hitter, while Beck and Lijewski will occupy defensive positions.
Another veteran back in the lineup is junior Chelsea Adcock, who will play outside hitter, while sophomore Cassidy Bieau is expected to see action at middle-hitter.
Murphy said she expects key contributions from the other players on his team, which opened the season Saturday, Aug. 22 by going 1-3 at the Alma Invitational.
