STANDISH — The third annual chicken dinner and auction to raise money for the Arenac County sheriff’s canine unit raised nearly $5,500 when it took place at the Standish Knights of Columbus hall Oct. 25.

According to organizer Jody Wilk, the amount exceeded what the fundraiser raised in each of the previous two years by about $1,500.

“I figure a good 500 people came through,” Wilk said. “We had 112 silent auction items, which was more than double the amount from previous years.”

Wilk said the dinner ended up running out of chicken about 6:50, ten minutes before the dinner was closing down and the final items were being raffled off. Gift cards, a convection oven, an HD television, and a toy dodge charger were among the items awarded through the raffle.

The canine unit with the county sheriff’s department is funded entirely through donations and fundraisers, with no taxpayer dollars going toward training, feeding and equipping the canine officer, Sonic.
