SSCS student count down 21 from last fall

School of choice numbers increasing

STANDISH — The number of students currently enrolled at Standish-Sterling Community Schools is down 21 from this time last fall according to Michael Dewey, acting superintendent.

According to Dewey there are currently 1,709 students enrolled in the district at this time. In September 2010 there were 1,730 students enrolled and in February 2011 the district had 1,716 students enrolled. According to Dewey, the state will give districts approximately $6,800 per student.

Dewey said SSCS was expecting to see a decrease in the number of students enrolled for the 2011-12 school year.

“That is a better number than what was originally anticipated for the district,” he said. “This district was preparing for a loss of students.”

Dewey said one bright spot is that the district has seen growth in the number of school of choice students enrolled. He added that SSCS will receive the same amount of funding for school of choice students.

“Right now we have 37 school of choice students,” he said. “We are very pleased with that.”

Of the 37 school of choice students, 14 are enrolled at Standish-Sterling Central High School, including five ninth graders and four 10th graders. Dewey said he is most satisfied by the number of kindergarteners, nine.

“If we are getting these students here in kindergarten, that means they usually stay,” he said. “That is definitely a good thing.”

Dewey said the district’s developmental kindergarten program has helped lure more students to the area.

“Obviously the community was very interested in that developmental kindergarten program,” he said. “The growth of that program shows that this is something the community wanted and supports. Hopefully, when these students move forward to regular kindergarten classes, they will stay in this district.”

Dewey said eight school of choice students are coming to SSCS from both Pinconning and Omer, while six students are coming from Bentley.

The final student count will not be taken until Wednesday, Oct. 5.
