SSC students win top places in industrial ed competition

HEMLOCK—Students from Standish-Sterling Central High School’s metal technology, intro to metals, and woodshop classes welded and carved their way into first place at the Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society (MITES) Regional Competition at Hemlock High School. At the event, which took place during the weekend of April 23-25, the students placed two division-winning projects, 15 first-place projects, seven second-place projects, and one third-place project.

SSC High School Teacher Jim Proctor said he was very proud of what the students did.

“I am really proud of them. It’s nice to get these kids some recognition,” he said. “In total we had 24 projects and 22 of them placed in state.”

Students who placed in the top four projects in the state out of 365 regional projects moved on to the State MITES Competition in Sault Ste. Marie during the weekend of May 6-8. Those who placed in the top three places out of 6,911 projects got a ribbon, a plaque, and will be mentioned in the MITES post-convention magazine.
