STANDISH-STERLING — Standish-Sterling's girls basketball team built a huge early lead, found itself hanging on for dear life and ended up pulling out a 49-42 homecourt victory over Clare on Monday.

"We jumped out to a big lead, but Clare fought back nicely," said SSC coach Kevin King. "It was somewhat of a rollercoaster ride."

The Panthers blew out to a 23-4 lead as Abbye Gulvas scored seven points in the opening quarter and Ellen Walderzak scored six.

Clare still trailed 30-17 at the half, but made an adventure of it in the fourth quarter as Teri Taylor scored nine of her game-high 19 points to get the Pioneers back in the game.

"We need to work on finishing better," King said. "We need to make better decisions in the fourth quarter to close things out. But it was a good win; we'll take it."

Abbye and Ashlyn Gulvas each scored 12 points to lead SSC (9-6), with Kayla Hilyard adding eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Panthers travel to Ogemaw Heights on Friday, Feb. 13, to attempt to avenge an early-season defeat to the Falcons.
